The course is designed to introduce learners to the writing, phonetic, lexical and grammatical system of modern Persian and to acquire basic communication skills in Persian. The theoretical notions will be reinforced using grammar exercises, practical exercises, translations and conversations based on written texts or audio/video materials that will cover a variety of communicative situations as well as Persian culture (literature, history, art and civilisation, society, etc.).

Course structure:
Lectures 1-3: An introductory presentation; the Persian alphabet; writing, transcription, pronunciation exercises; simple greetings, farewells, apologies, expressing gratitude, etc.
Lecture 4: Alphabet review and spelling issues; personal and demonstrative pronouns; numerals from 1 to 100; basic conversational structures.
Lecture 5: Sentence structure; copulative verbs ‘to be’ and ‘to have’; interrogative particles; introduction expressions and personal information (age, occupation, nationality, etc.)
Lecture 6: Noun (category of determination and non-determination, plural); expression of time and calendar (days of the week, months, seasons, Iranian holidays)
Lecture 7: Adjective and adverb (classification, degrees of comparison); isaphet and isaphic phrases; descriptions (physical and moral traits, city, living area, etc.).
Lecture 8: Enclitic pronouns and the expression of possession; family relationships; review.
Lecture 9: Persian verb system, formation and use of preterite; shopping, market / supermarket / bazaar.
Lecture 10: How to form and use the present indicative; daily activities, leisure, hobbies
Lecture 11: Imperative; finding your way around town, asking for and giving information
Lecture 12: Present subjunctive and modal verbs; at the restaurant/bakery/café, Iranian cuisine (dishes, drinks, tastes)
Lecture 13: Imperfect; recounting past events (actions, personal experiences, events one has seen/read about)
Lecture 14: Verbal participles and the simple perfect; travel – transportation, accommodation, travel documents, etc.
Lecture 15: Past subjunctive; expressing opinions, intentions, desires, fears, assumptions
Lecture 16: Passive voice; impersonal verbs with enclitic pronouns; at the physician – body parts, health, diseases, conditions and sensations
Lecture 17: Past perfect; institutions, authorities and public services (at the bank, post office, etc.); the politeness system in Persian (ta’arof)
Lecture 18: The future tense; exercises, dialogues and articles on the theme ‘travel to Iran’ (attractions, geographical aspects, cultural landmarks)
Lecture 19: Phrase syntax and basic types of subordinate sentences; writing letters/emails.
Lecture 20: Particularities of colloquial Persian; texts, exercises and summarising applications to consolidate vocabulary and grammatical structures.
